Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief was carried out during groundworks at The Beckett School, Ruddington Lane, Wilford, Nottingham. The watching brief was required as a condition of the planning consent for a new housing development at the site issued by Nottingham City Council. The site had previously been subject to archaeological evaluation by ULAS in 2011. The evaluation revealed a number of linear features in the northern part of the application area, dated to the Iron Age. The Historic Environment Record (HER) for Nottinghamshire indicates that various archaeological sites have been identified within 300m of the proposed development area. A Bronze Age axe and cropmarks possibly of Bronze Age date have been recorded in the vicinity. No archaeological features were observed during the visits. During the later visits heavy rain had flooded and waterlogged much of the site and these conditions were not conductive to the identification of archaeological features.
