Abstract/Summary

A programme of archaeological evaluation by trial trenching was undertaken on land at 2 Northern Road, Newark, Nottinghamshire. The works were undertaken as a condition of planning consent for the erection of 2 No. industrial units (Class B2 use). The development site is located on Northern Road which runs to the south east from Lincoln Road Bridge, which also bounds the site to the north. The site is approximately 2252m2 and is presently occupied by large areas of tarmac car parking and existing buildings in a strip of retail units and associated parking. The evaluation comprised of the excavation of two, 10m long by 1.8m wide trenches across the proposed development area. Trenches were located on the ground using as survey grade GPS operated by a competent member of the Past to Present field team. No deposits of archaeological significance were encountered throughout the evaluation. Therefore the trenching has shown that the development will have a negligible impact upon archaeological remains.
