Title PROPOSED EXTENSION TO BUILDINGS B AND G, MAGNUS BUILDINGS, THE FORMER GRAMMER SCHOOL, APPLETON GATE, NEWARK, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE: ARCHAEOLOGICAL TEST PIT REPORT
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2013

Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation consisting of a single test pit was undertaken on land at the Magnus Buildings, the Former Grammar School, Newark, as the first element of archaeological mitigation associated with an extension to existing buildings in the north-west corner of the site. The site lies on the eastern edge of the medieval centre of Newark, and is the location of the Grammar School constructed in 1532. The school buildings were changed and expanded over the next four centuries, prior to a major redevelopment in 1914, at which time many of the original Tudor buildings were demolished. A single test pit was excavated as the initial phase of archaeological mitigation for the development of a new building adjacent to existing Buildings B and G in the north-west corner of the site. The test pit revealed at least three structural phases in this area, with associated demolition and occupation layers. The precise dating of the walls could not be ascertained, although pottery and ceramic building material from surrounding contexts suggests that they date from the 18th-20th centuries.
