Abstract/Summary

An archaeological strip, map and sample of the intrusive ground works was conducted; comprising the stripping and excavation of a 315m2 footprint of a new storage tank, on land Southeast of Kelham Road, Newark. The 315m2 area that was stripped for the footprint of the storage tank was excavated to a depth of 0.5m BGL, with a further 6 sondages being excavated within the footprint to a depth of up to 2.10m BGL. No archaeological features were observed within the strip or the sondages, but a sequence of clay and sand alluvial deposits were observed extending to at least the bases of the six sondages. These alluvial deposits were consistent with the sites location within the Trent River flood plain, which could explain the lack of archaeological features and finds within the development area. A geoarchaeological review of the site was deemed necessary due to the alluvial nature of the location. A single auger sample was taken ca. 45m southwest of the stripped area, The core revealed two Holocene alluvial deposits, including waterlogged peat deposits at the bottom of the palaeochannel.
