Title Eel Pie Farm, Great North Road, Markham Moor, Bassetlaw, Nottinghamshire: Archaeological Evaluation Report
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2022

Abstract/Summary

A programme of archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of the construction of a proposed holiday lodge development on land at Eel Pie Farm in the hamlet of Markham Moor, near Retford in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire. Eel Pie Farm is situated within an area in which several cropmark and earthwork remnants of earlier landscapes have been recorded, although none can be dated. The farmhouse dates back to the late Middle Ages, although the land on which the development site stands did not become part of the farm until Parliamentary Enclosure in the early 19th century. Of the six trenches excavated, five were archaeologically negative, whilst the other contained three furrows related to medieval agriculture.
