Abstract/Summary

A programme of archaeological earthworks survey was carried out on land south of Briar Lea, Main Street, Ragnall to inform a planning application for residential development. The site lies in an area of earthworks recorded on the Nottinghamshire Historic Environment Record as part of the shrunken medieval village, contemporary with the earthworks of the Scheduled Monument of Whimpton deserted medieval village c.750m to the west. The survey has identified and mapped ridge and furrow earthworks on a c.east-west alignment across the majority of the site with a boundary / trackway extending towards Whimpton, interrupted by later post-medieval features including two ponds and associated drainage ditch and the northern end of a landscaped orchard. A 20th century water treatment tank has also impacted on earthworks in the southeast corner of the site. The ridge and furrow earthworks are evidence that this was part of the open field system of the medieval village. The survey did not identify any evidence for domestic occupation, such as closes or building platforms, or for any other post-enclosure activity within the site.
