Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken at 16 Church Street, Ruddington, Nottinghamshire during the widening of the driveway and excavation of footings for a new dwelling. The site is located in the core of the historic village of Ruddington and has a boundary with the Grade II listed Church of St Peter which has thirteenth century origins but was largely rebuild during the Victorian period. The churchyard wall was built of stone reclaimed from the church at Flawforth that was demolished in 1773 with the graveyard consecrated in 1775. The brick walling of the graveyard fronting Vicarage Lane and Church Street was built in 1884. The proposed new dwelling is located directly south-west of Church Side, a Grade II listed house believed to date from the mid-sixteenth century with later seventeenth and eighteenth century alterations and extensions. Cartographic evidence indicates that an additional building extended from the west gable of Church Side with a north to south oriented row of cottages or range of buildings running from the east end of the alms houses prior to their demolition between 1938 and 1955. The first area was located in the driveway providing access to Vicarage Lane in the south-east of the development site. The work comprised the partial removal of the graveyard walls, both the Victorian brick wall fronting Vicarage Lane and that extending northwards within the curtilage of Church Side to the stone wall built in 1773. The ground level was then reduced in both the graveyard and the driveway. The second area was located to the south-west of Church Side. The work comprised stripping the area of its topsoil followed by the excavation of the foundation trenches for the new dwelling. Within the first area there was an absence of graves or disarticulated human skeletal material due to the small proportion of the graveyard excavated and the relative late date of its consecration. Modern deposits and services were encountered. The excavation in the second area established that the building extending from the west gable of Church Side was either erected, or altered, during the latter half of the nineteenth century.
