Abstract/Summary
A fluxgate gradiometer survey was undertaken on land south of Clifton, Rushcliffe, Nottinghamshire.
Despite the large target area, the survey has identified limited geophysical indicators of potential archaeological remains. The likeliest candidate was at the eastern edge of one area, where a group of linear anomalies appears to define ditches that encompass the western part of a rectilinear enclosure. Other potential ditches were recorded on land c.100m to the west, with less convincing examples situated 275m - 300m to the west. These were recorded relatively close to known/suspected Iron Age and Roman remains. Elsewhere, a number of predominately isolated linear and discrete anomalies have been tentatively flagged as ditches and pits respectively.
The survey recorded clear evidence of modern and recent occupation, including land drains, cultivation (principally residual traces of ridge and furrow ploughing), services and miscellaneous ferrous-rich materials, such iron objects, brick and tile fragments (some dense scatters).
Natural responses include a widespread zone of relatively strong responses in the south-eastern and lowest part of the survey. These are considered to represent ferrous-rich mineral deposits, possibly associated with a former wetland environment. A sub-honeycomb array to magnetically depleted linear anomalies registered at the eastern side of the site probably signify some form of periglacial process, such as glacial fissures.
