Title Calverton (Burnt Stump) Quarry, Arnold, Nottinghamshire Phase 3: Strip, Map, and Record
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2018

Abstract/Summary

An archaeological strip, map and record excavation was undertaken ahead of sand and gravel extraction at the site of Calverton (Burntstump) Quarry, Arnold, Nottinghamshire. The quarry is located within the parish of Daybrook, approximately 2km south-west of the village of Calverton. It lies north of the junction between Oxton Road (B638) and Ollerton Road (A614). The excavation revealed a number of truncated linear ditches of probable Iron Age date. Some of the ditches corresponded well with crop marks and formed part of a larger field system which extended to the north and south of the excavation area. Evidence for small scale post-medieval sand and gravel quarrying was also encountered in the form of irregular pits which had been backfilled with a combination of upcast material and domestic waste.
