Abstract/Summary
A detailed gradiometer survey was conducted over land at Newton Airfield, Nottinghamshire. The project was commissioned with the aim of establishing the presence, or otherwise, and nature of detectable archaeological features in support of a planning application condition.
The site comprises arable fields located to the north and west of existing development works, covering an area of approximately 20 ha. The geophysical survey was undertaken on 3 and 4 April 2019 and on 8 and 9 August 2019. The detailed gradiometer survey has demonstrated the presence of a number of anomalies associated with the past use as an RAF airfield.
Infrastructure such as former taxiways have been identified in the north-west and south-west of the site as well as areas of possible hardstanding. The possible footings of a fence line and other features, such as lights, have also been identified.
Numerous services have been identified throughout the site. These are likely associated with the former airfield layout. However, it is possible the services identified are still in use or modern in providence. The north of the survey area is also densely covered in ferrous material likely associated with the military use of the site.
Numerous isolated pit-like features have been identified throughout the site, the majority distributed in the south of the site. While they have been interpreted as possible archaeology, their isolated nature suggests a natural origin is more likely.
Other features of note are a series of land drains which are present throughout the site, with the clearest examples of these visible in the south of the survey area. An existing bridleway has been identified in the centre of the site. Ploughing has also been identified in the north of the site. A possible turning circle for a vehicle has also been identified in the south of the site.
