Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation was carried out on land off Jessop Way, Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire. A total of thirty 50m x 1.8m trenches were excavated during the course of the evaluation within two large arable fields. Nearly all the trenches contained the remains of furrows, oriented north-west to south-east. Five trenches also contained the remains of former post-medieval hedgerows and four contained made ground at their southern ends corresponding with the known extent of the former quarry. The southern and central parts of the site had been previously quarried during the 20th century for gypsum and these areas had been backfilled and re-instated. Nearly all the trenches contained modern field drains on a variety of alignments. A few other anomalies were revealed as modern disturbances and one trench contained the remains of a modern former pond, with another containing a deep lower subsoil, possibly alluvial in nature and related to another nearby pond identified on early OS maps. A group of four small stake-holes were revealed in a trench at the eastern end of the site. None were dated but were likely to be post-medieval or modern in date. Most of the features including the furrows, former hedgerows and field drains had been identified during the geophysical survey. The hedge lines correspond with those shown on the early OS maps of the area.
