An archaeological evaluation by trial trenching was undertaken on land off Abbey Road, Aslockton, Nottinghamshire, in support of a planning application for a residential development. The site lies in an area of potential archaeological interest, with Iron Age or Roman cropmarks identified within the site boundaries. Geophysical survey identified a large number of features that are morphologically suggestive of both settlement and agricultural features of later prehistoric to Roman date. Six trenches were excavated across the development area, the locations of which were targeted on the results of the geophysical survey and agreed in advance. The trenches revealed a large number of features of potential archaeological interest, corresponding well with the preceding geophysical survey. Two phases of activity were identified on the site, the main phase relating to a series of agricultural enclosures on the periphery of settlement, and dating to the Late Iron Age to early Roman period. A feature towards the eastern side of the site produced environmental evidence indicative of possible milling and drying of grain, either for storage or for brewing, but there was no evidence to confirm that the associated activity was occurring on the site. The second phase of activity related to the presence of medieval to post-medieval plough furrows extending across much of the site. The evidence clearly indicates that the site is of local significance.
