Description
There is variable evidence implying archaeology on the Project Site. Finds from the surrounding landscape (notably the Roman remains) are difficult to associate with anything more substantial than agricultural practices. The finds occur as individual sherds of pottery spread over a wide area and are unlikely to represent settlement. However, place-name evidence for the site implies it was nearby a Roman settlement (probably Margidunum, although this is not certain). Conversely, archaeological investigation in the school grounds did not find any evidence for Roman activity. Instead, Medieval and Post-Medieval furrows indicative of agricultural activity were found.
