Abstract/Summary
This report details the results of a ground penetrating radar survey in Newark Market Place, Newark, Nottinghamshire. The GPR survey was primarily undertaken to discover search for the presence of subterranean structures such as cellars, walls or foundations, underneath the town centre. The survey area was a relatively level cobbled Market Place, surrounded by buildings on all sides.
The radar survey has successfully identified a series of anomalies in the survey area. It is significant that the above gravel alluvium caused rapid attenuation of the radar signal, however sufficient clarity of data was provided to identify a series of possible wall features. The lamp posts were also clearly visible in the data. However, no evidence was obtained of tunnels beneath the market place. Given that such features would have to cut the gravels and be contained within the alluvium, it is interpreted that the radar survey would have detected such features if they were present.
However, of significance are four polygons which are interpreted as number of possible wall features. These features are on the same alignment as the existing buildings to the north of the anomalies, indicating some relationship to these buildings, being possible cellars. Another possible wall is visible as eight polygons.
