Title One Murphy Hub, Ollerton, Nottinghamshire: Archaeological Trial Trench Evaluation Report
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2025

Abstract/Summary

In April 2025, an archaeological trial trench evaluation was carried out at Ollerton, Nottinghamshire. Prior to the trial trenching, a geophysical survey was carried out at the site. The survey identified several possible archaeological features. The archaeological trial trench evaluation comprised the excavation of 54 trenches across two fields, separated by a stream centrally. Of the 54 trenches, 28 were located in the field to the west of the stream, with the remaining 26 in the field to the east. A total of 43 of the trenches contained no archaeological features. The results of the trial trenching found that the majority of geophysical anomalies did correspond with archaeological features. The existence of a large boundary ditch was confirmed in the west field, along with a small number of furrows. In the east field, a complex network of field drains was confirmed, along with a pond. Several natural channel beds followed the natural undulation of the ground towards the brook. A single piece of Roman pottery was recovered from the fill of a large boundary ditch seen in three trenches. The pot was abraded and likely residual, meaning it is not necessarily indicative of activities taking place within the immediate site, but probably more so the wider landscape.
