Abstract/Summary

A scheme of archaeological evaluation trenching took place at the former Watermill Public House, 67 Millgate, Newark-on-Trent, in the Newark & Sherwood District of Nottinghamshire. Two trenches were located within the former, Grade II listed buildings car park to the rear of the property to assess the potential for archaeological remains in advance of the construction of three cottages. A previous Heritage Impact Assessment for the site identified a high probability for surviving archaeological remains in the pub car park, where a late-18th-century malthouse was formerly located. The evaluation yielded remains of the former Malthouse within one trench in the form of external and internal walls and floor surfaces. A brick and tile floor were recorded running along the sections of both trenches, possibly a later, elevated floor surface? Four pits were also recorded in another trench. Three were deemed to be early modern, with one, earlier, undated pit revealed at the south-east end of the trench.
