An archaeological evaluation of a 4.1 ha parcel of land located was undertaken on land east of Church Street, Cropwell Bishop, Nottinghamshire, as part of the conditions for planning permission for the building of 85 dwellings and associated access. The trenching identified post-medieval field boundaries in the south of the site, and evidence for ridge and furrow agriculture across the site, particularly in the east and south. A large post-medieval refuse pit was found within the south-west of the site. A series of postholes and other cut features was found within the southern edge of the site, with one of these containing medieval pottery. The evaluation established that the remainder of the site does not contain large concentrations of archaeological features, with 20 of the 25 trenches excavated reporting no archaeological remains other than furrows. The artefactual assemblage was mostly recovered from the post-medieval field boundaries and pits within the site, made up of ceramics, CBM, glass and animal bone. One sherd of medieval pottery was recovered from the posthole structure within the south of the site. The presence of large numbers of charred grains in the posthole fills and pit suggest that there were domestic crop processing activities occurring in the area, and the site has good potential for the preservation of environmental evidence and further sampling.
