Abstract/Summary

A Statement of Significance for an area of ‘irregular earthworks, Norton’, which are recorded within the Nottinghamshire Historic Environment Record, was undertaken. The area partially lies within the footprint of a proposed residential development at Norton Grange Farm, Main Street, Norton, Nottinghamshire, NG20 9LP. This report brings together the results of a geophysical survey conducted for the site, along with topographical and LiDAR data, historic mapping, and a review of the Historic Environment Record data, to determine the significance of the irregular earthworks. The geophysical, topographical, and LiDAR surveys have helped to interpret the ‘irregular earthworks’ identified within the Site on the Nottinghamshire HER. A number of possible features were identified, including structural remains, a semi-circular feature (possibly a spread in building debris), and a number of possible pit-like anomalies, as well as an irregular natural trend. The statement of significance has considered the archaeological features, concluding that, where there is likely to be an impact from the proposed development, the significance of the remains is such that it would not present a constraint to that development. Here the remains relate to former late 19th-century agricultural outbuildings associated with an earlier residence located within the southeast corner of the site. Significance lies in their archaeological and historic interest, although this would be limited. The remains have some potential to elude to the historic development of the settlement of Norton and the Site. While the nature of any archaeological remains beyond the proposed development area remains uncertain, they are unlikely to be impacted by the proposed development.
