Title Southwell, Nottinghamshire: Geophysical Survey Report
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2025

Abstract/Summary

An archaeological geophysical survey was undertaken at land west of Southwell, Nottinghamshire. The survey did not reveal any anomalies thought to be of archaeological origin. However, a positive anomaly that may indicate a pit-like feature characteristic of an area of mineral extraction or refuse was noted in the centre of the Site. Due to its isolated position and lack of any other probable earlier features within the dataset, it is plausible that it is modern in provenance and is likely the result of recent agricultural activity, or even a natural feature. A dipolar, linear anomaly along the western boundary has tentatively been noted as an uncertain trend. It has a broadly parallel alignment to the field boundaries and a modern footpath which may infer the remains of an unrecorded former land division. The remains of a former boundary feature illustrated in historical Ordnance Survey (OS) maps (1830’s – 1880’s) is in the southern portion of the Site. Evidence of historical agricultural activity in the form of ridge and furrow was also noted within the dataset. The remaining anomalies are limited to modern ferrous disturbance along the survey extents, as well as sporadic, dipolar, ferrous ‘spikes’ located throughout the Site
