Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation by trial trenching was undertaken on land adjacent to Hayside Cottage, Lowfield Lane in Balderton, Nottinghamshire, as part of a planning consent for residential development. The surrounding area of the site has shown limited activity of prehistoric to post-medieval date with the most notable features relating to the medieval to post-medieval ridge-and-furrow system surrounding the site. The archaeological trial trenching comprised the excavation of 21 trenches scattered across seven fields. The evaluation revealed buried remains of medieval/post-medieval furrows following a north – south orientation, with several undated pits and gullies likely to have derived from natural processes such as bioturbation, with linear features probably representing former hedgerows of probable post-medieval/modern date. The archaeological evaluation by trial trenching confirmed the presence of medieval/post-medieval field system crossing the site with some truncations from 20th century allotments.
