Abstract/Summary

As part of the work undertaken from August until October 2025 to repair the damage to the building fabric of St Andrew’s caused by poor drainage of rainwater, areas of flaking plaster and cement rendering were removed from badly affected sections of the church. This work provided an opportunity to examine the materials used in the various renovations and rebuilding of the church. The North Aisle, North Transept, Chancel, South Transept and Porch were photographed to record the materials exposed following the removal of the covering surface. In doing so it has proved possible to identify work carried out by the Howe family in the late C17/early C18, by T.C. Hine in the 1840’s and by Rev. Thomas Butler in the 1850’s and 1860’s. The photographic evidence suggests that the secondary sources are generally correct as to the refurbishment and rebuilding of St Andrew’s. The degree of demolition prior to rebuilding by Butler is probably overstated for the two transepts. The church was most likely originally built from Blue Lias and other stone rubble and rendered with a lime plaster.
