Abstract/Summary
A programme of archaeological monitoring associated with repair works was undertaken adjacent the Old Boiler House at Clumber Park.
The monitoring works, which involved the excavation of a service trench, extended along the western wall of the Burrow Play Centre where it rounded the north-western corner of the building and continued on a slight diagonal to the south-western corner of the Old Boiler House. Three structural phases of construction, spanning the mid-late 19th century to the 20th century, were identified within the c.22.5m long trench. The earliest phase is represented by the brick heating system and foundation remains of two of the former glasshouse/carnation houses at Clumber Park, which were constructed for the 6th Duchess of Newcastle. The latter two phases are represented the remains of a gravel pathway/car park, constructed after the demolition of the structures, and finally two areas of modern utilities.
