Description

Parish church. C13, C14, C15, restored 1865. Dressed stone, ashlar dressings, mostly rendered C20, with slate and leaded roofs. Chamfered and moulded plinths, coved and chamfered eaves, moulded crenellated parapets, coped gables with kneelers. West tower, nave, north aisle, chancel, vestry, south porch. West tower, C15, 2 stages, has coved string course and eaves band with gargoyles to north and south. Crenellated parapet with 4 crocketed pinnacles. 2 shallow diagonal buttresses to west, 3 setoffs. First stage has to south a stair light and above, clock. To west, late C15 double lancet with round heads, panel tracery and hood mould. To right, stair light, and above, clock. Second stage has 4 C15 double lancet bell openings with round heads, panel tracery and hood moulds. Nave, 3 bays, has to north gabled octagonal chimney and to east a plain buttress, 2 setoffs. South side has to east, a restored C13 double lancet with plate tracery and hood mould. To west, late C15 triple lancet with cusped heads and four centred arched reveal. North aisle, 2 bays, has 2 diagonal and single central buttresses, 2 and 3 setoffs. West end has remains of a small buttress. To east, C15 double lancet with cusped ogee heads in square headed reveal. To west, chamfered blocked doorway with hood mould and mask stops. To its right, C14 double lancet with trefoil heads and cusped quatrefoil, hood mould and mask stops. Unbuttressed chancel, 2 bays, has blank north side and to east, restored C14 triple lancet with trefoil heads, geometrical tracery, and coved reveal. South side has off-centre priest's door, blocked and with hood mould. To east, C13 double lancet with trefoil heads, plate tracery and hood mould. To west, restored C13 lancet, taller but otherwise identical. Single bay vestry, C15, has a diagonal buttress to north east, 2 setoffs. North side has early C16 double lancet with cusped round heads, and triangular headed reveal. South porch has late C13 south doorway, double chamfered and rebated, with round shaft responds on stepped octagonal bases and with moulded round capitals. Interior has stone benches and round stoup re-set on east side. C19 principal rafter roof with collars. Inner south doorway, C15, has elliptical head with cove and roll mouldings. C19 door. Nave north arcade, late C13, 3 bays, has 2 round piers and 2 half round responds with stepped round moulded bases and simple moulded capitals. Keeled and roll moulded rebated arches with dogtooth. South door has stoup recess to right. South side east window has C15 stained glass fragments in head. C19 roof in C15 style with moulded principal rafters carried on curved brackets from moulded corbels. arch, C13, double chamfered and rebated, with moulded conical responds, that to right incised 'G N'. Tower chamber has carillion keyboard and west window with stained glass fragments in head. North aisle has 2 windows with stained glass fragments in head. C19 lean-to roof with curved brackets on moulded octagonal corbels. Chancel arch, early C14, double chamfered and rebated with hood mould and keeled half-round responds with round moulded bases and capitals. North side has to west, C14 double chamfered and rebated opening with matchboard infill. East end has sill band and window with stained glass, C19. South side has, to east, chamfered piscina with segmental head, and to west, blocked doorway. 2 windows with stained glass fragments in heads. C19 pseudo-hammer beam roof with curved brackets on carved corbels and minor kingposts above collars with curved brackets to ridge. Fittings include font, with C19 round and square base, square shaft with 4 minor shafts, and C13 shallow eggcup bowl with C19 cover. C19 painted ashlar pulpit on round stem with clustered piers and square top with traceried panels. C20 timber lectern with octagonal stem. Moulded matchboarded C19 oak benches. C16 oak plank chest with short legs and fleur de lys straps and hinges. Sanctus bell in vestry. Monuments include war memorial tablet in alabaster frame, 1918. (NCC/js)
