Description

Country house. C17. Remodelled and stuccoed 1770-71. Single storey right wing, 1809. Single storey left wing 1815. Brick and dressed stone, stuccoed, with hipped and gabled plain tile and slate roofs. Plinth, first floor and eaves bands, coped parapets and gables with ball finials and urns. 3 side wall and 4 ridge stacks. 3 and 2 storeys. Central block with 3 storey and single storey wings in the arrangement 3/2/3/2/3 bays. Main east front has recessed central bay with pedimented Doric porch containing 8 panelled door, flanked by single glazing bar sashes. Beyond, in wings, 2 similar full height sashes. Beyond again, 3 similar full height sashes. Above, 7 glazing bar sashes. Above again, a pair of pedimented dormers with glazing bar easements, flanked by single glazing bar sashes. To right, adjoining C19 cottage. 2 storey, 2 bays, has a single glazing bar sash on each floor. To right again, C19 slated lean-to porch with panelled door. South front has 4 French windows with glazing bar overlights. Rear elevation has recessed central bay with flanking wings and to left, stair turret. Recessed bay has 2 C20 lean-to additions with a half-glazed door. To left, C20 lean-to addition with a casement. To its right, 4 glazing bar sashes and to right again, plain sash in turret, with segmental head. To right again, single glazing bar sash and a French window with overlight. Above to left, 3 glazing bar sashes, plain sash in turret, with segmental head, and to right again, 3 glazing bar sashes. Above again, to left, dormer with segmental head, and to right, glazing bars sash and a hatch. To right again, another dormer with segmental head, and to its right, a Yorkshire sash. Cottage, to left, has to left a glazing bar sash and panelled door with overlight. Above, a C20 casement. Outside, C19 lead water pump with C20 wood case and curved handle with acorn end. Interior has central entrance hall with cantilevered stair with landing, fretted strings, fluted newels, turned balusters and ramped scrolled handrail. Rear stair has square newels and turned balusters. Drawing room has deep foliate cornice, possibly C17, and C19 plaster ceiling. Other principal rooms have moulded chair rails and cornices, 4 moulded C19 marble fireplaces, reeded doorcases and panelled doors. Main bedroom and dressing room have full height timber panelling and moulded cornices, 10 C18 2-panel doors, 2 plank doors. Principal rafter roof with tenoned collars and purlins. (NCC/js)
