Description
Gatehouse range of Carthusian Priory. Now stores and cowsheds. 1343. Additions and alterations late C19 and mid C20. Coursed and squared rubble and brick. Plain tile and asbestos cement roofs. Ashlar dressings. Single gable stack. Single storey, 4 unequal bays. Square plan around crewyard. South side has to left, taller building, reduced and re-roofed mid C20, with blocked opening and stable door. To its right, lower building with stable door and chamfered slit window. Rear has to left, a slit light and a stable door. To right, small casement and stable door. East gable has slit light altered to form a breather. Above to right, a small door. Interior has to east, remains of 3 chamfered gatepiers and to north, blocked slit light. To west, chamfered span beam with stops and wall shaft with arch brace on corbel. C19 strutted truss roofs. East side has to lefty C19 door and to right 2 small casements. Rear has mid C19 brick cowshed, with 3 doors and 4 casements. North range has blank north and south sides and open east gable forming implement shed. C19 west gable has 2 doors and above, 2 hatches, all with segmental heads. C19 strutted truss roof. C19 cowshed to west incorporates part of rubble wall. Also a Scheduled Ancient Monument No.1. (NCC/js)
