Description

Pair of lodges flanking central archway. Early 1860s, restored 1983. By S.S. Teulon for the Tenth Duke of St. Albans. Gothic Revival style. Brick and timber framing with gabled, pyramidal and polygonal slate roofs. Partial moulded plinth, first floor band, dentillated eaves. 2 grouped buttressed ridge stacks. 2 and 3 storeys, 5 bays. Windows are late C20 casements in original openings. North west side has central rebated archway with hood mould, flanked to left by a buttress and to right by octagonal stair turret, 3 stages, with single stair light; polygonal roof and finial. Beyond, 2 casements. Above; 2 plaques with monogram, dated 1877. Above, to left, gabled cross eaves dormer and to right, a casement. Above again, gatehouse has jettied third stage with square' oriel window on shaped brackets. Below it, wooden plaque inscribed 'Alexandra Lodges July 3rd 1878' referring to a Royal visit. Gables have each a central chamfered doorway and above, a casement. South east side is a reflection of north west side. Below arch, 2 doorways and pair of buttresses carrying scrolled wrought iron gates. (NCC/js)
