Description

Lych gate. Mid C19. Ashlar and timber with plain tile roof. 2 ashlar flanking walls have chamfered copings. 2 moulded posts with double arch braces. King post roof with purlins and collars. Pair of elaborate wooden gates with crenellated posts. (NCC/js) The lych gate at Emmanuel Church Bestwood was identified as possessing special interest when it was first listed in 1987. Believed to date to the mid-C19, the lych gate formed an entrance to the churchyard of the Grade II* Emmanuel Church, built as an estate church between 1868-1869 by S.S. Teulon. The lych gate is in the Gothic Revival style. In 2008, listed building consent was sought and granted for the dismantling and re-erection of the lych gate from the south-east end of the churchyard to the west end. The work was carried out in 2009 and included the construction of new stone base walls to support the original timber frame. The relocation of the lych gate is not considered to have had a detrimental impact on its special interest. The lych gate’s relocation to the western end of the churchyard brings it back into use as the main gateway and demonstrates the symbolic importance of the thresholds between the secular and sacred zones of a parish. Given this, the lych gate is considered to retain its special interest and fully merits retention on the List. The original Bulwell and Ancaster stone wall and stone steps remain in situ on the south-east side of the churchyard. The steps have since been paved over to form a ramp. Although the original walls remain as the historic entrance to the churchyard from Bestwood Lodge, the special interest of the lych gate lies with the upper wooden structure which has been relocated. It is this structure which it to be retained on the List.
