Description

Stable block, adjacent pump and attached hen house, c.1800. Red brick. Hipped slate roof. Dentil eaves. Set on a plinth. Single storey, 10 bays. The central 2 bays of 2 storeys slightly project and are gabled with an ashlar pediment formed in the gable. The outer 2 bays on each side project. 2 central segmental arched coach doorways. Either side are single similarly wider arched recessed perches. The right porch with 3 inner doorways each with panelled door. The left porch has 3 inner doorways, the central doorway with panelled door and glazing bar Yorkshire sash overlight. Further left and right are single glazing bar sashes. The projecting bays each have 2 tall round arched blind recessed panels. The right side has a single glazing bar sash in the right panel and in the left panel a blind recessed window opening, both under segmental arches. The side wall of the left projecting bays has 2 similar panels the right with doorway with panelled door and the left with single glazing bar sash both under cambered arches. The side wall of the right bays has 2 similar open panels. Inner doorway with panelled door under cambered arch and to the left a similar blocked doorway. The east side of this wing has 4 similar blind arches, the central 2 with single glazing bar sashes and the outer with single blind recessed panels, all under cambered arches. Above, 2 small blocked window openings under cambered arches, pediment with single clock face. 4 metres in front is a late C19 decorative cast iron water pump. Attached to the left, lying behind the projecting bays, is the early C19 red brick hen house with hipped slate roof and wide eaves overhang. One and a half storeys, 9 bays. Central large cambered arched recessed porch with inner wooden imperial stair and single doorways on each floor of each side. Either side are single wooden louvred openings with glazing bar overlights, single doorways, single similar louvred openings and single doorways, all under segmental arches. Projecting from the left is a similar wing with 2 doorways under segmental arches in the side wall. The side wall of the stable block has a single small louvred opening with glazing bar overlight under a segmental arch. To the right is a round arched recessed porch with inner doorways to centre and left. Above are 4 wooden louvred openings under cambered arches. Interior of first floor of stable block has some C17 decorative wooden panelling. (NCC/js)
