Description
Country house, now offices. Built 1789-92 by Thomas Gardner of Uttoxeter for Thomas Edge. Incorporates fragments of an earlier house. Service wings to north late C19. Brick, rendered, with Westmorland slate hipped and gabled roofs. Ashlar dressings. plinth, first and second floor bands. Deep moulded eaves and pediments. Plain parapets. 7 ridge, 2 side wall and single gable stacks. 3 storeys, 7 bays wide by 5 bays deep. Square plan. Windows are mainly glazing bar sashes. South front has projecting pedimented central bay with 3 sashes, flanked to left by 2 sashes. To right, a sash and a French window. Above, 7 sashes and above again, 7 smaller sashes. East front has slightly projecting pedimented central bay with pedimented square porch, with corner pilasters. Door with fanlight flanked by single Doric columns and beyond, single keystoned round headed niches. Each side has single round headed window. Beyond, 2 sashes and to right again, late C19 square bay window. Above, 5 sashes, and above again, 5 smaller sashes. Late C19 service wing, to right, 2 storeys, 5 bays, is stepped back in 3 stages. Regular fenestration with mullioned casements and sashes. West side has keystoned doorway with chamfered rustication and half-glazed door with overlight. Flanked by single round lights and beyond, single sashes. Beyond again, to left, C19 triple sash. Above, 4 sashes. Above again, 5 sashes. Above again, a smaller sash. North side has single and 2 storey service buildings, late C18 and late C19, arranged round rectangular court. Single storey lean-to west wing has door and casement. Interior has square entrance hall with 3 floor cantilevered moulded staircase with iron balusters and wreathed handrail. Moulded round headed opening, Adam style cornices, brass chandelier. Castle room, incorporating base of C13 tower, has pointed barrel vault, wall panelling C17 and C18, and mid C19 Gothic fireplace. Drawing room has dentillated cornice and to north, central round headed recess flanked by single doors with dentillated and moulded architraves. Classical marble fireplace with Blue John panels and late C18 steel grate. Other principal rooms have re-sited C18 panelling and cupboard doors, and C18 panelled doors. Several Classical fireplaces with hob grates. Former first floor stair well, to west, has early C18 moulded doorcase with pulvinated frieze and over door. (NCC/js)
