Description
Beeston railway station. 1847. Canopy late C19. Rear extension early C20. For the Midland Railway. White brick. Steep pitched slate roof with pierced bargeboards. Rear addition has coped gables. Ashlar dressings, quoins and blocked architraves. 4 gable and single ridge stacks. Single storey, 5 bays. Windows are cross mullioned easements with lozenge glazing bars, and C20 casements. Symmetrical platform side has 2 square gabled projecting bays flanked by minor gables. To left, mullioned casement and door. To tight, pair of C20 doors with overlight. Beyond, door flanked by single casements. Beyond again, C20 opening and mullioned casement. Above, major gables have each a shield inscribed 'M R' and '1847'. Hipped, glazed canopy, 5 bays, has panelled stanchions, curved brackets and traceried spandrels. East gable has single storey parapeted addition with door flanked by single casements. To its right, shouldered opening with wrought iron gate. To right again, rear addition has 2 easements and to north-east 4 casements. Attached to south west long wooden platform shelter. 1848, originally constructed at Southwell Station transferred here 1871. Wood and cast iron with C20 asphalt roof coveting. 8 bays with wooden partitions between each bay. Partitions have canted tops with east iron braces and projecting straight iron braces which support iron trusses to angled single pitch roof. Vertical plank backs and wooden benches with turned legs to alternate bays, some incomplete. Roof has 3 continuous wooden purlins and plank roof with plain wooden bargeboards. North-east bay has single 4 panel door and single window. (NCC/js)
