A series of trial excavations were conducted at the Northgate allotments, following the discovery of Ro material on the surface. (1) Report planned for Newark Archaeological and Local History Society. (2) Part Excav by Sulley, G. & Gorin, 1974. (3) Excavations in the allotment area were conducted in 1973-4 by volunteers led chiefly by Mr S Gorin. 6 trenches of various sizes up to 5m square were distributed over a a roughly 50m square area between the bowling green and North Gate. Each trench was hand-excavated by spade to the level of natural gravel, generally about 0.5 - 0.7m below ground surface. The resulting surface was then cleaned and features recorded and then excavated. (4) See E9376 for later trial trenches.
