Full Description
A series of trial excavations were conducted at the Northgate allotments, following the discovery of Ro material on the surface. A number of ditches and gullies were revealed. (A plaster floor - see L8521) and tumbled wall material were found by an allotment holder. (1)
Finds included pottery of various types and Ro nails. (2)
Six trenches, between the bowling green and North Gate. All contained several intersecting pits, ditches and smaller features. A number of the smaller features contained only Ro pottery, while others contained both Ro and Med pottery, where the former must be residual. The "subsoil" was probably a layer disturbed by allotment digging. (3)
See L8521 for Med features, L8522 for P Med pottery. See L3689, L3666 for finds in this area - see map.
