Description

The objective of the excavation was to ascertain how the earthwork was constructed and if any subsoil cut features were associated with it. Two trenches were excavated across the low bank of the earthwork. … unfortunately, at no point was it possible to fully straddle the earthwork and extend beyond to reveal the sequence of deposits on both sides. Both trenches were 3m wide and c.4m long. Trenches were excavated wholly by hand in 5cm shovel spits until sands and gravels were revealed. (1) Grid ref centred between the two trenches. See E9159 for survey of earthwotrks.
