Description

Intensive fieldwalking of two areas (areas A and C) was undertaken over a period of nine days. Area A (c.11ha) was focussed on the sand ridge in the SW corner of the site and Area C (c.2ha) was focussed on the exposed Older River Gravels at the N central side of the site adjacent to Bawtry Road. The intensive fieldwalking survey was undertaken on the basis of 10m squares, individually numbered and walked by a surveyor for 4 minutes. Observed finds that were clearly post medieval in date were examined on site for any intrinsic interest (none noted) but otherwise not collected. Fragments of brick or tile that were obviously modern or which retained no diagnostic features were also not retained. Finds recovered from each square were identified by area letter and individual square number. Area C, no finds were recovered even though visibility of modern material on the field surface was fair and flint should have been clearly visible against the dark peaty soil. (1) Grid reference for Area A, Area C to north. See E9425 for geophysical survey, E9424 for Phase 1 watching brief, E 9423 for Phase 2, E9450 for Phase 3.
