Description

A series of test pits on a 20m grid … over the SW corner of Boat Field, where earlier evaluations had indicated a Mes flint scatter. (After discovery of coins by fieldwalking) test pits were set out to locate the focus of the coin scatter. The ploughsoil was removed in 5cm spits and sieved through a 7mm mesh, down to the top of the subsoil. Test pit 71, where the metal detector had indicated a high concentration of metal, revealed a feature. It was extended into a 4sqm test pit, the feature was removed in approximately 2cm spits. (1) Grid ref for test pit 71. See E9442 for fieldwalking, E9444 for metal detecting, E9217 for earlier fieldwalking.
