Full Description
The first coins were discovered on the ploughed surface during fieldwalking. Test pits were then set out to try and locate the focus of the coin scatter. Test pits were dug in areas indicated by metal detecting. In test pit 71, part of a small, dark feature cut into the subsoil was visible. It comprised a small, sub-rounded pit. Total number of coins, 743 (637 coins, 106 blanks). (1)
A hoard of lead forgeries of Charles I shillings buried in a pit. The pit was located within a gap between two sets of ditches and post alignments interpreted as successive field systems. A nearby pit contained burnt clay and lead waste suggesting manufacture close by. The context for the deposition of this hoard is likely to be Civil War. (2)
