Seventeen trenches, the majority measuring 30 x 3m, were stripped of topsoil using a JCB down to the underlying subsoil. These were positioned along the projected road corridor to target both cropmark sites and geophysical anomalies, and to test apparent blank areas. With the exception of three trenches (Trenches 03, 15, 16, 17) [sic], features of archaeological significance were identified in 14 trenches. Small scale excavation of features was undertaken, sufficient to establish character, extract samples for palaeoenvironmental analysis, and to provide an opportunity to recover dating evidence.
