Description
Challenge House is situated at 1 Devonshire Avenue, Beeston, Nottingham at the junctions of Devonshire Avenue, Chilwell Road and Newcastle Avenue. Challenge House is a large Edwardian house with extensions added in the late 20th century. Chilwell Road is a double fronted property build between the 1st and 2nd World Wars.
The investigation was undertaken during week commencing 7th June 2010. The excavations clearly demonstrated that the feature was in fact an air raid shelter associated with the property at 20 Chilwell Road. It was constructed of double course brick walls and a reinforced concrete roof.
The size and position of the structure clearly is outside the proposed area of redevelopment and therefore can remain intact and in-situ.
