Title Archaeological Evaluation of a Reputed World War II Air Raid Shelter
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2010

Abstract/Summary

A reputed World War II air raid shelter in the back garden of Challenge House (1 Devonshire Avenue, Beeston) was investigated prior to redevelopment of Challenge House and the property adjacent to Chilwell Road. The investigation was undertaken during week commencing 7th June 2010. The excavations clearly demonstrated that the feature was in fact an air raid shelter associated with the property at 20 Chilwell Road. It was constructed of double course brick walls and a reinforced concrete roof. The size and position of the structure clearly is outside the proposed area of redevelopment and therefore can remain intact and in-situ
