Description
The study area is a roughly rectangular parcel of land, approximately 1450 square metres in area, on the south-east side of Millgate, Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire.
A desk-based assessed was conducted.
The following sources have been consulted in the preparation of this assessment:
Nottinghamshire Historic Environment Record (Nottinghamshire County Council)
Historical mapping of the study area (Nottinghamshire Record Office)
Geological mapping (British Geological Survey digital mapping)
Published and unpublished archaeological and historical reports
Early photographs in the Millgate Museum collections
The assessment has determined that there are likely to be significant buried archaeological remains within the study area. There is a high probability that medieval and post-medieval remains dating from the 13th to the 18th centuries survive. This may include the remains of early frontage building(s) on the site of the former White Horse Inn. Surviving street frontage archaeology of this type is relatively uncommon, having often been destroyed by later development and particularly cellaring in the 19th century. There is lesser potential for the survival of Prehistoric, Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Civil War period remains on the site.
Any surviving archaeological remains are likely to occur at a relatively shallow depth below present ground level. Intrusive groundwork associated with the proposed development, including the excavation of foundations, laying of services, landscaping and surfacing work may have an adverse impact upon buried archaeological remains.
