Abstract/Summary
Desk-based archaeological assessment of land at 3 Watermill Yard, Millgate, Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire has determined that the study area may contain significant archaeological remains.
Suburban settlement developed along Millgate from about the 13th century and buried archaeological remains of medieval and post-medieval date are likely to survive, possibly including the remains of buildings along the street frontage. In the late 18th century the White Horse Inn occupied the Millgate frontage with a malthouse and various cottages in White Horse Yard to the rear of this. The study area also encompasses another row of 18th century cottages, which fronted onto Watermill Yard; remains of all of these buildings are likely to survive. There is lesser potential for archaeological remains of earlier periods but the possibility of settlement and/or burial evidence of Roman and early Anglo-Saxon date cannot be discounted; nor can evidence of Civil War period defences and possibly inhumation burials.
