Description

The proposed development of a new health centre was located on derelict land, formerly housing and commercial properties, on the south-east side of King Street immediately south of Market Place in Sutton in Ashfield's town centre. This was approximately 21km north of Nottingham. The development site covered c.0.25 ha. The work involved the observation of previously machine stripped surfaces and the supervision and inspection of machine dug foundation trenches. This was carried out using a 360 degree mechanical excavator using a 0.6m wide toothed bucket. The foundation trenches were typically dug to be c.06m wide and between 1m and 1.3m deep. The exceptions were in areas along the King Street frontage where rubble filled cellars were emptied to a depth of c.2.2m. Five inspection visits were made in total. The evidence visible in section suggests that the site has been extensively disturbed in the past, by the extensive 19th century buildings which once occupied the site and more recently their demolition. The presence of a pit and possible beam-slot near the King Street frontage, and clearly pre-dating the 19th and 20th century buildings provides a small hint of earlier occupation but neither feature could be sufficiently characterised or dated making further interpretation futile. No other features of archaeological significance were observed across the site.
