Description
On 29th November 2005, a ground penetrating radar survey was undertaken at Rufford Abbey in the parish of Rufford, Nottinghamshire. The survey was commissioned by NCC as part of a programme of geophysical investigation seeking to understand the extent and layout of the abbey complex.
An orthogonal grid survey was carried out at a base frequency of 500MHz using a Mala Geoscience AB RAMAC/GPR system consisting principally of a shielded monostatic antenna, CUII control unit and XV11 monitor.
Profiles were spaced one metre apart in both X (north-south) and Y (east-west) direcitons, with a station spacing of one centimetre.
The time window for reflection measurement was set to 48.7 nanoseconds, which corresponds to a penetration depth of 1.7m at a measured radar ave propagation velocity of 7.0cm/ns.
Radar successfully imaged the subsurface of a courtyard at Rufford Abbey to a depth of more than 1.5m. Little evidence of archaeology was found in the data, although underground services were identified at various depths.
