Description

HMP Lowdham Grange lies to the west of Lowdham, within the Borough of Newark and Sherwood. The site lies on the western edge of the parish of Lowdham in an area that had been used as agricultural land since at least the medieval period. The expansion proposal lie to the north and east of the existing prison, and include the construction of two house blocks and an activities block containing kitchen and recreation rooms, perimeter wall and replacement areas of car parking. The watching brief was concentrated on the new car parking area and the area of expansion of facilities. The watching brief involved the control and supervision of ground disturbance to identify any deposits of archaeological importance. No archaeological finds, deposits or features were encountered during the watching brief. The presence of modern overburden deposits across the stripped area of car park and the south eastern corner of the expansion of facilities, indicates that any underlying natural deposits remain either undisturbed at an undetermined depth or heavily truncated in these areas. The excavation on the south-west side also failed to reveal any archaeological deposits or features which may suggest an absence of occupational activity on the site, although it is possible that extant archaeological features could survive below the make up layers.
