Description
Located approximately 0.6km north of the village of Colston Bassett, the proposed development site is 19ha in area, and comprises two large arable fields. The site is bounded on all sites by mature hedgerow boundaries with two areas of modern plantation located in along the eastern boundary and northwest corner.
The defined study area for the assessment of the heritage resource has been measured from the boundary of the proposed development site and encompasses a buffer area of a minimum of 1km around its edge. The size of the study area ensured that historic mapping and data sources provide sufficient information about the site and its surrounding landscape from which to assess known and potential impacts on the archaeological resource. This in turn provided a clearer indication of the site’s history, context and archaeological potential. All known heritage assets of archaeological interest identified within this radius, and close to the perimeter of this study area, have been considered in this assessment.
This desk-based assessment also includes an assessment of the potential contribution the site may make to the setting, and hence significance of, designated heritage assets within 2km of the site.
No prehistoric or Roman remains are recorded within the site; however, there is evidence for settlement and other features associated with these periods within the wider study area, in particular to the west of Langar Hall. It is therefore considered that there is some potential for currently unrecorded archaeological remains of these periods within the site. A study of aerial photography however, did not yield any indication of features associated with these periods.
The site lay beyond the focus of the medieval settlements of Colston Bassett and Langar and therefore there is limited potential for remains of medieval settlement within the site.
The field directly to the north of the site is historically referred to as ‘Gallowehill’, and the location of gallows at the meeting point of four parishes was plotted within the field on a map of parish of Colston Bassett dated c.1600. A number of sites have identified a correlation between the location of medieval/post-medieval gallows and earlier Anglo-Saxon deviant burial grounds. As such it is considered that there is the potential for such remains in the field directly north of the site. If an early medieval site was present then there is some potential for remains to extend into the north area of the site; however, although there is a known correlation, such sites are uncommon and normally small in scale restricting the extent that it would extend into the site. Any remains of burials would be considered to be of high heritage value.
The site would appear to have remained within the agricultural hinterland of Colston Bassett from the medieval period until present, and as such should there be any unknown archaeological features dating to the medieval and post-medieval periods these are likely to comprise agricultural features of low archaeological significance. Such features might include remnants of field boundary ditches (including those recorded on cartographic sources), the remains of ridges formerly associated with ridge and furrow earthworks and drainage ditches/channels. Such features are considered to be of limited heritage value.
