Description
An archaeological desk-based assessment of c. 18 hectares of land to the east of Kirk Ley Road, East Leake, Nottinghamshire.
The spatial scope of the assessment comprises a study of the site itself; and also considers all known archaeological sites, events and find-spots recorded on the Nottinghamshire Historic Environment Record within the 1km study area. The assessment also incorporates all other (designated) heritage assets within a 1km study radius, including Grade I, II* and II listed buildings, Scheduled Monuments, Conservation Areas; and Registered Historic Parks and Gardens. Research for the assessment was conducted in September and October 2012.
Desk-based research conducted during this assessment comprised an examination of relevant, up-to-date information held by the Nottinghamshire County Historic Environment Record (NHER), including previously recorded archaeological investigations. In addition, published and unpublished documentary, cartographic bibliographic and photographic sources were examined at the Nottinghamshire Archives (NA). Information pertaining to Scheduled Ancient Monuments, Listed Buildings, Conservation Areas; and Registered Parks & Gardens was obtained from English Heritage, NHER, Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) and various online resources.
The information obtained from the various sources was analysed and a map regression exercise undertaken, in order to assess the likely prehistoric and historic land use of the site. The assessment also incorporated a site visit and detailed walkover survey to identify any unrecorded archaeology, to examine the topography and to record previous and current land use.
The potential of a site to contain archaeological remains is based upon a consideration of its topography and the distribution and nature of recorded archaeological finds and other sites in the locality
