This study concerns the archaeological monitoring of the groundworks pertaining to the redevelopment of a redundant former garden centre and the proposed construction of four new residential dwellings with associated garages, car parking and access road on land at Grove Hall Gardens, Main Street, Grove, Retford, Nottinghamshire. A search was undertaken of the Nottinghamshire Historic Environment Record (HER) for a 0.5km radius centred on the development site. Background research was also undertaken at the Nottinghamshire Archives. The National Heritage List of English Heritage was also consulted for further information of listed buildings in this search area. Copies of early and later Edition Ordnance Survey maps were obtained from the Nottinghamshire Archives and the First Edition six inch to one mile scale Ordnance Survey (O.S.) map of 1889 was consulted. The archaeological monitoring was undertaken, this comprised the continual archaeological monitoring and recording of the groundworks, which comprised an initial phase of mechanical ground reduction for the new site access road, followed by the mechanical excavation of several service trenches. These excavations were carried out by a 5-ton 360° mechanical excavator that was fitted with 0.30m and 0.90m wide toothed buckets. Archaeology was recorded on standard pro-forma context recording sheets. A plan of the site at a scale of 1:200 was compiled The report concludes there was no archaeological activity present on this site and no finds were made. No further archaeological monitoring was deemed necessary. Report contains details of a Map regression (no images) and photographs of the site during excavation.
