Abstract/Summary
This study concerns the archaeological monitoring of the groundworks pertaining to the redevelopment of a redundant former garden centre and the proposed construction of four new residential dwellings with associated garages, car parking and access road on land at Grove Hall Gardens, Main Street, Grove, Retford, Nottinghamshire.
The proposed development site is located within the historic core of the medieval settlement of Grove. There is ample evidence in the locality of the possible shrinkage of this settlement through earthwork remains, though these are undated. The settlement is also documented in the Domesday Survey of AD1086, so this settlement is very likely to have had late Anglo-Saxon origins. It was considered very likely that archaeological features, deposits, structures and finds associated with the Anglo-Saxon and medieval settlements of Grove may be found on this site. The specific objectives of the archaeological watching brief were to record any archaeological features, structures, deposits or finds associated with these Anglo- Saxon and medieval settlements.
The archaeological monitoring of the mechanical excavation of the road corridor and of the two service trenches identified a simple deposit sequence of a modern topsoil, an undated buried soil horizon and an underlying natural horizon throughout these monitored groundworks.
There was no archaeological activity present on this site and no finds were made. No further archaeological monitoring was deemed necessary.
No archaeological features, deposits, structures or finds associated with either the Anglo-Saxon or the medieval settlements of Grove were found.
The report contains an archaeological and Historical Background of the site and surrounding area, it references historic Ordinance Survey maps and contains photographs of the site during excavations.
