Description

A geophysical survey was carried out as part of an archaeological field evaluation of a proposed gravel extraction site at Averham near Newark, Nottinghamshire. The survey detected features which are likely to represent the main focus of settlement activity within a group of previously recorded cropmarks at the site. It additionally detected numerous land drains and other non-archaeological ground disturbances, but did not respond to cropmarks which may represent ditches or enclosures in the vicinity of the settlement site. This limited response could relate either to soil properties at the site, or to the condition and state of preservation of the cropmark features. Fluxgate magnetometry and Caesium magnetometery geophysical techniques were used to carry out the survey.
