Abstract/Summary

A geophysical survey was carried out as part of an archaeological field evaluation of a proposed gravel extraction site at Averham near Newark, Nottinghamshire. There is a desk based report relating to this geophysical survey, excerpts and images from this are referred to during this report. The desk based assessment identified a number of HER entries with-in the evaluation area, a number of crop marks of uncertain date a Neolithic axe head and an un-dated well. A significant crop mark complex is comprised of a large linear feature, a ring ditch and trackway, the DBA suggests that these may represent farmsteads of late Prehistoric or Romano British date. Fluxgate magnetometry and Caesium magnetometery geophysics were used to carry out the survey. The survey detected features which are likely to represent the main focus of settlement activity within a group of previously recorded cropmarks at the site. It additionally detected numerous land drains and other non-archaeological ground disturbances, but did not respond to cropmarks which may represent ditches or enclosures in the vicinity of the settlement site. This limited response could relate either to soil properties at the site, or to the condition and state of preservation of the cropmark features.
